Enfield has a new indoor rowing hub for young people, home to the borough's first inter-school indoor rowing league. Seven schools have now signed up.
Enfield has a new Indoor Rowing Hub for young people. It will host the borough’s first Indoor Rowing League, with regular competitions between schools.
The hub was launched on 6 October. Three more schools joined the programme on the day, taking it to seven. Enfield Council announced the hub on 26 October. (Enfield Council, 26 October 2026)
What the hub is for
The council says the hub will be a dedicated space for three things:
- training
- competition between schools, through the new league
- personal development for the young people taking part
It is run by Active Enfield, the council’s sport and leisure team, working with the council’s Nexus team. The council’s announcement does not say where the hub is, which schools have joined, or how often league fixtures will run. We have asked the council.
A world champion as the programme’s champion
Luca Ferraro, an Under-23 world champion rower and a former pupil of The Latymer School in Edmonton, attended the launch. He is the official champion of the Enfield Youth Rowing programme.
The Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Emma Supple, and Cllr Maria Alexandrou, Cabinet Member for Environment, were there too. So were supporters from British Rowing, London Youth Rowing and Youth Charter. Pupils raced each other and were coached on their technique.
Artist Chikaora Obiora unveiled an artwork commissioned for the hub. The council says it represents the aspirations of the borough’s young rowers.
Cllr Alexandrou said the hub was “a great stepping stone” for schools. She said it gave young people “an opportunity to try a new sport that most would not get to try otherwise.”
Cllr Chris Dey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said the Nexus and Active Enfield teams were “working together to expand access to high-quality sporting opportunities.”
Seven months from first event to league
The programme is young. The borough’s first indoor rowing event was on 3 March this year, at The Latymer School. Forty-nine pupils from Year 7 to Year 11 took part, from five schools:
- Bishop Stopford’s School
- Enfield County School
- Edmonton County School
- The Latymer School
- Lea Valley Academy
(Enfield Council, 17 March 2026)
Their times went into the Virtual Junior Indoor Rowing Championships. The event was also a route into the London Youth Games indoor rowing competition in June.
What it means for you
Indoor rowing needs no river, no boat and no previous experience, which is why it suits schools. If your child is at secondary school in Enfield, ask the school’s PE department whether it is one of the seven in the programme.
Schools that want to join can contact Active Enfield, which runs the borough’s London Youth Games entries. For more on what is happening across the borough, see our things to do in Enfield page.
