The quickest run into Liverpool Street is 23 minutes, from Ponders End. Zones, journey times and peak fares for all 20 Enfield stations, on four different lines.
Enfield has twenty stations and four ways into central London, and they do not behave alike. Two of them are National Rail, one is the Underground, one is the Overground, and they land you at three different terminals with fares that differ by up to £3.70 for the same morning.
The single most useful thing to know is that the fastest train out of the borough is not from Enfield Town. It is the 23-minute run from Ponders End into Liverpool Street on the Lea Valley line. Enfield Town itself, on the Overground, takes 36 minutes to reach the same terminus.
Everything below was checked against Transport for London’s own journey planner and fares data for a weekday 08:00 departure.
The four routes out
Piccadilly line (Underground), to King’s Cross and the West End. Cockfosters is the end of the line, then Oakwood, Southgate and Arnos Grove. This is the only route in the borough with a genuine turn-up-and-go frequency and the only one that puts you on the Underground network without changing.
Great Northern (Hertford Loop), to Moorgate. Crews Hill, Gordon Hill, Enfield Chase, Grange Park, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green. Fast to the City, and the most expensive way to travel from Enfield. Peak trains run to Moorgate; outside the peak some services terminate at Finsbury Park, so check before you travel.
London Overground, Weaver line, to Liverpool Street. Turkey Street, Southbury, Enfield Town, Bush Hill Park, Edmonton Green and Silver Street, on the Enfield Town branch and the Southbury loop. TfL fares apply, which makes this the cheaper of the two City routes.
Greater Anglia (Lea Valley line), to Liverpool Street. Enfield Lock, Brimsdown, Ponders End and Meridian Water, down the eastern edge of the borough. The quickest journeys in Enfield are on this line.

The fare trap: Great Northern costs more than the Tube
Enfield Chase and Cockfosters are both zone 5. A peak single from Cockfosters to King’s Cross is £5.30. A peak single from Enfield Chase to Moorgate is £6.60. Same zones, same morning, £1.30 apart.
The reason is that Great Northern is a National Rail operator charging National Rail pay-as-you-go rates, while the Piccadilly line and the Overground charge TfL rates. Greater Anglia journeys from Ponders End and Brimsdown come in at the TfL rate of £5.30, so the premium is specific to the Hertford Loop.
At Crews Hill, zone 6, the peak single to Moorgate is £8.50. That is £3.70 more than the £4.80 an Arnos Grove or Southgate commuter pays, on a journey 22 minutes longer.
Off-peak, the gap narrows but does not close: Enfield Town to Liverpool Street drops to £3.80, Southgate to King’s Cross to £3.60, Enfield Chase to Moorgate to £4.40.
Caps, Travelcards and what a year costs
Every station in the borough is inside the TfL zonal system, so contactless and Oyster capping applies and there is no separate season-ticket market to shop around in. These are Transport for London’s 2026 adult rates:

Most of the borough is zones 4 and 5, so most Enfield commuters are looking at £76.40 a week or £3,056 a year for an all-day zones 1 to 5 Travelcard. Living in Palmers Green, Southgate, Winchmore Hill, Arnos Grove, Edmonton Green, Silver Street or Meridian Water puts you in zone 4 and saves £488 a year.
Three Enfield stations sit in zone 6: Crews Hill, Turkey Street and Enfield Lock. A zones 1 to 6 annual Travelcard is £3,264, or £208 a year more than zones 1 to 5.
If you travel three days a week rather than five, the daily cap usually beats a Travelcard: three zone 1 to 5 days cost £45.90 against £76.40 for the week.
Which station should you actually use?
If you work in the City, the Lea Valley line is the borough’s best-kept secret. Ponders End to Liverpool Street is 23 minutes at £5.30. Enfield Town, on the same fare, takes 36.
If you work in the West End or Bloomsbury, the Piccadilly line wins outright. Southgate to King’s Cross is 24 minutes at £4.80 and you are already on the Underground when you arrive.
If you work at Moorgate or Old Street, Great Northern puts you there without a change from six stations, but you pay National Rail rates to do it.
If you are choosing where to live, the zone boundary is worth real money. Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Arnos Grove are zone 4. Enfield Town, Enfield Chase, Grange Park, Oakwood and Cockfosters are zone 5.
